Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu will take you out of your comfort zone and give you something to work towards. Although there are less belt colours in BJJ than some other martial art forms, it takes longer to progress from one colour to the next, because each colour from white to brown has 4 stripes, each representing a level that needs to be achieved before advancing to the next colour.

Adults start out with the white belt, advance to the blue belt for a minimum of 2 years, to the purple belt for at least 1.5 years, to the brown belt for at least 1 year before moving onto the black belt. One has to be 16 years of age or older to advance from blue belt to purple belt and to qualify for a black belt, students may not be younger than 19 years old. Once black belt has been achieved, it’s time to strive towards attaining degrees. A degree is earned every 3 years, depending on skill levels, contribution to the martial art and teaching ability, and goes up to the 10th degree.

Children start with white belts too, but because of the ages required to progress to blue belt and higher, their belts are a bit different up to the age of 16. Their belts each contain 4 stripes representing 4 levels of each colour, which are white, yellow, orange and green, before advancing to the adult belts.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is great for the whole family, because of the positive value system it instills, as well as the health, fitness and confidence aspects, but the added bonus is the quality time family members can spend practicing various techniques with each other.
